CLAYCOMB CEMETERY

Greene Township
Jay County, Indiana

Introduction                  Jan 2006

While growing up in Indiana, I heard about the Claycomb Cemetery at every family reunion. I knew the cemetery was important to our family because we had many relatives buried there.

During my annual research trips back to Indiana I visited the cemetery many times. While reading the tombstones in the cemetery for “my” relatives, I decided to compile all the information I could find on the beginning of the cemetery and the families buried within. I gathered quite a bit of information, so I decided to share the information with other researchers so they would not have to spend time uncovering items I already compiled.

How To Get To The Cemetery

The Claycomb Cemetery is located in the southwest quarter of Jay County in Greene Township. Highway 27 divides Jay County into east and west sections. The easiest way to get to the cemetery is to drive south approximately 2 miles out of Portland on state highway 27. Turn right (west) on 200 South. Continue west 8 miles, you will pass through the small village of Green. The Claycomb Cemetery is north of 200 South, north of the T-intersection of 800 West. The cemetery is located approximately a quarter of a mile down a gravel lane. It lies in the center of farmlands and is well marked with a six foot sign on 200 South.

Claycomb Family in Jay County

(Johann) Henry Claycomb was born about 1779 in Berkley County, Virginia. Henry married Susan Hully (probably in Berkley County) before 1809. Henry and Susan had six children, who were all born in Virginia:

          Elizabeth            born: 19 February 1809
          Mary                  born: around 1811
          Samuel               born: 10 February 1813
          Susannah Jane    born: 1817
          George               born: 22 September 1819
          Jacob                 born: 22 September 1819

Henry served nearly a year in the War of 1812. The Claycombs moved from Berkley County, Virginia to Belmont County, Ohio in 1827 then in 1830 to Licking County, Ohio. In 1838, the Claycombs moved and settled on Brown’s Creek in Jay County, Indiana. Henry purchased over 1,000 acres in Greene Township. On 8 April 1843, Henry sold and or gave much of his land to his children and relatives.

Henry Claycomb died on 22 September, 1849 at the age of 70. He is buried next to his wife and their son, Jacob. The land George Claycomb received contains the Claycomb Cemetery. Samuel R. Claycomb, George’s son (born 25 March 1865), apparently inherited the land containing the cemetery since he is the person who donates the land for the first, second, and third addition to the county according to the original cemetery plat.

George Claycomb married his wife Hannah Holmes Gaunt in September 1842 in Jay County. They had at least 11 children.

Samuel Claycomb married Phoebe Harrison in February 1836, also in Jay County. They had at least five children.

Mary Claycomb married James Dugan in Licking County, Ohio. They had at least one child.

Elizabeth Claycomb married Jacob Hiser in Licking County, Ohio. They had at least five children, and lived in Jay County.

Cemetery Plots

Each cemetery plot in the first, second and third additions measures ten feet wide by 25 feet long. Each plot can hold up to five graves. The walkway between rows of plots is four and one half feet wide.
